Fragments

The ancient Mayans believed the natural wells to be gifts from their gods.
In 1990 researchers poring over satellite pictures from NASA noticed a strange pattern in the northern part of the Yucatán. If you do a dot-to-dot of the cenotes there, you get an imperfect semi-circle which sweeps from the north-eastern border with Quintana Roo, down beyond the ruined Mayan city of Chichén Itzá and back up to the coast west of Mérida. At the centre of this wobbly semicircle lies the Chicxulub Crater, a long-buried hole beneath the sea with a diameter of more than 100 miles, which is where the meteor that is believed to have done for the dinosaurs crashed 65m years ago. Some now wonder if the cenotes were bored into the land by heavy rocks shed by the meteor as it screeched over the Yucatán on its flight path into the Gulf of Mexico. The Mayan belief that the cenotes were sent from the heavens may not have been far wrong.
I can’t wait to dive here next year.
